1. Definition of a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist  


The Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS®) is a credential offered by ADED representing advanced experience and expertise in diverse areas within the field. A CDRS® is an experienced practitioner in the field of driver rehabilitation who, through successful completion of a formal certification examination, has proven their capacity to provide services within the full spectrum of driver rehabilitation services. The CDRS® is considered by ADED to be the gold-standard in terms of driver rehabilitation service provision. A CDRS® is obligated to follow ADED’s Best Practice Guidelines for the Delivery of Driver Rehabilitation Services to keep driver evaluations standardized, formalized and objective, and attests they will adhere to the ADED’s Code of Ethics. 2. Objectives of Certification  

The purpose of the certification process is to protect the public by:

  1. providing measurement of a standard of current knowledge desirable for individuals practicing driver rehabilitation;
  2. >encouraging individual growth and study, thereby promoting professionalism among driver rehabilitation specialists
  3. formally recognizing driver rehabilitation specialists who fulfill the requirement for certification.
 3. Eligibility    

As of July 2020, there are seven ways to qualify to sit for the CDRS exam.  Legacy qualifications will be honored through the 2023 examination cycle.  Full details can be found in ADED Policy 409 and 409.1

4. Examination Fees  
The application processing fee is non-refundable. The examination fee is refundable if the applicant does not meet eligibility criteria.

5. Recognition of Competency    

Eligible candidates who pass the CDRS® Examination will receive a certificate indicating they have achieved credential status as a Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (DRS). Certification is effective for 3 years beginning immediately upon official notification of a passing score and ending on December 31st of the third year.


Upon successful completion of the examination, a CDRS® earner will be provided an iconic/digital symbol for use in identifying themselves as having earned that accolade. The digital CDRS® symbol will link back to an electronic verification system on the ADED platform that allows consumers, employers, referral sources, and colleagues to view and confirm the educational achievement awarded to the CDRS ® earner. These icons are highly-visual and shareable online. Digital icons help individuals gain recognition for their achievements and make those achievements portable, verifiable, and discoverable. Digital CDRS® icons are easily posted on websites, social m edia, professional networks, resumes and in email signatures. Publicly displaying earned CDRS ®  icons enables employers, colleagues, and clients the ability to discover and verify an individual’s training and skills, which can lead to increased career opportunities.

6. Examination Window  

There are two ways you can take the CDRS® Examination:

Paper/Pencil:Not Available for 2020

The examination is typically offered after the conclusion of the ADED Conference. The CDRS® Examination is not part of the ADED Conference. A separate application is required.



The CDRS® examination is also available at over 190 AMP Assessment Centers in the United States and Canada during the months of July and August. (Please note that the examination is in English.)

7. Renewal


Certification as a driver rehabilitation specialist will be valid for a period of three years. To be eligible for re-certification, the individual shall complete 30 approved contact hours during their three-year certification period.
