The CDRS® certificate is the accepted benchmark for quality in driver rehabilitation services.

Only ADED can grant the CDRS® certification. The certification is granted to those successfully passing a rigorous examination. The CDRS® Examination is designed to test a well-defined body of knowledge representative of professional practice.

The content of the CDRS Examination has been defined by a national role-delineation study. The study involved surveying practitioners in the field of driver rehabilitation to identify tasks that were performed routinely and considered important to competent practice.

The most knowledgeable specialists are Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists.

CDRS® must maintain their education in the field over time to stay current and as a requirement maintain their certification. Each CDRS® is obligated to follow ADED’s Best Practice Guidelines for the Delivery of Driver Rehabilitation Services and ADED's Code of Ethics to keep driver evaluations standardized, formalized and objective. This obligation keeps competency high, ensuring credibility, the possibility of career advancement, and potential for increased salary.

ADED is the only organization solely dedicated to the professional educational needs of the driver rehabilitation specialist. There are currently only about 350 active Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists in the US and Canada. All Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists are encouraged to maintain ADED membership to stay on top of emerging trends in the industry and enhance their skills.

A growing need

Driver rehabilitation specialists work with people of all ages and abilities, exploring alternative transportation solutions for drivers with special needs. This includes helping older drivers and their families master the challenges of diminishing driving skills. The aging of Americans promises to increase substantially the numbers of people at risk for disability. What’s more, by 2030, 60 million 70-year-olds will be licensed to drive, spurring a need for more qualified driver rehabilitation specialists, certified driver rehabilitation specialists, and driver rehabilitation programs.

Right now, more than 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 each day, a pattern that will go on for the next 17 years.

A helping hand

With backgrounds in healthcare and/or driver education, driver rehabilitation specialists are professionals who have completed additional training and education in the field of driver rehabilitation. These are smart, caring people with excellent interpersonal skills and a creative, "can-do” attitude – people who can make a real difference for older drivers as well as those with special needs.
