Current Licensed Driving Instructor, Driver Rehabilitation Specialist
• Employed full time in the Driver Rehab Program working exclusively to evaluate and train clients who have medical issues that may affect their ability to drive safely working in conjunction with an Occupational Therapist. Clients may have a valid license or be already under medically suspension (as advised by the Ministry of Transportation) due to a change in their medical status (physical, cognitive, emotional, visual, behavioural) that has caused concern regarding their fitness to drive. Or, an unlicensed driver may wish to see if he/she has potential to drive in the presence of a medical condition.
• Assists with medical and vision waiver functional evaluations with the Occupational Therapist
• Assist with providing feedback about performance at the time of evaluation and during training. Provide education and strategies to help to compensate for deficits.
• Provide specific training to clients who have vision deficits, need driving equipment or have anxiety about driving.
• Assist with progress and evaluation report writing.
• Attend regular workshops and courses regarding the impact of disabilities and treating anxiety disorders.
• Participate in mentoring opportunities on a weekly basis with the Occupational Therapists in our driving program.

• Educated newly licensed drivers on defensive driving skills both in classroom training and on-road training.
• Trained practical skills for emergency handling and adverse weather driving.
• Trained, mentored and evaluated new Driving Instructors and additionally, did remedial work and mentoring for problematic Instructors.
• Senior driving instructor who did evaluations and reviews of other driving instructors including re-qualifying instructors on an annual basis. Within the Young Driver’s corporation, I had Regional Instructor status.
• Screened new applicants for Defensive Driving Instructors skills for potential new hires.
• Trained Defensive Driving skills to corporate fleet drivers (class D)

o Attended annual ADED conference in Buffalo, NY – August 2014 – 16 contact hours on various topics including behind the wheel assessment, impact of disability, where rubber meets the road, and new drivers with medical conditions training program. 11 contact hours plus a variety of opportunities for driving new adaptive equipment and trialing assessment equipment at vendor booths.
 Vision Waiver Functional Assessment training workshop – June 2011 at MTO
 Initial introduction workshop to teaching and evaluating clients with medical conditions – prior to providing services at this facility.
o In car workshops in total of 9.5 hours and involved but was not limited to: various teaching strategies, installation and removal of various types of hand controls i.e.: Sure grip, MPD and Mennox, proper use of left foot accelerator, and various spinner knobs i.e.: single post, tri pin, and C cuff steering controls, steering counter weights. Demonstration and practice for transferring non able bodied persons into and out of the vehicle, proper fit of torso strap to stabilize clients while driving with limited trunk control. This workshop/orientation was conducted by Mr. John McRae, who was a driving instructor at Skill Builders, was a former High School teacher of Special Education and has been a licensed driving instructor and Driver Rehabilitation Specialist for 20 years. Successful completion was a requirement for my employment conditions and orientation to this specialized field.
o 3 hour workshop involved: standard driving assessments, Class G vision waiver assessment, and vehicle and adaptive equipment. Other topics involved: What is Occupational Therapy, training of OT’s, use of functional performances, occupation, and how driving fits into OT scope of practice. How driver assessment and training started in Canada, North America. ADED, both parent organization and provincial ADED. This workshop/orientation was conducted by Ms. Margaret Young, O.T. Reg. (Ont) CDRS,
o Observed ten in-clinic assessments with Ms. Wendy Nieuwland, O.T. Reg. (Ont) CDRS and discussed implications of what these findings may mean for when the client gets to the on-road portion of the evaluation.
o Observed ten on-road evaluations with Ms. Wendy Nieuwland O.T. Reg. (Ont) CDRS, driving instructor to learn observation and assessment skills required for maintaining a safe vehicle, predicting where the client may have difficulty, how to record observations and do an overall analysis. Worked to learn skills regarding how to assist the Occupational Therapist to determine which errors and issues are related to the client’s medical status.
 Conducted many on-road assessments and training sessions with Wendy Nieuwland, OT, CDRS, driving instructor and Maria Wright, OT, CDRS and driving instructor to gain skills, mentor and have feedback.
 Beginning in 2015, this licensed driving instructor provides mentorship to other driving instructors in approval functional assessment centres who are approved by the Ministry of Transportation. Mentees come to Skill Builders and learn assessment and treatment techniques for providing in-vehicle services.


September 2013 Co-Authored and co-presented with Wendy Nieuwland, OT, CDRS, DI:
Occupational Therapists & Driving Instructors – Working together within Driver Assessment Centres; a conference that took place in Barrie, Ontario on September 27/28 with 24 attendees. I presented on how to score the SPORT assessment during on road evaluations.

October 2013 Ontario ADED chapter – Presented a case study for new driver with CP driver assessment and training- successes and challenges

October 2015 Co-presenter with Wendy Nieuwland, OT, CDRS for a 6 hour workshop at the University of Ottawa / Ottawa Rehab Centre for the Assessment and Treatment of the Anxious Driver.
