Course Description


This 2-day course provides a broad overview of medical conditions and the driver rehabilitation process.  The course is designed for healthcare providers starting or advancing a driver rehabilitation program. Traffic safety/driver education professionals may also benefit from the information that they can apply to their practice.  Topics include: acquired, congenital, developmental and progressive disabilities; visual impairments, and the aging process as they affect driving; driver assessment and training; adaptive driver equipment, vehicle modifications and driver licensing issues.




By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate and describe the differences between acquired, congenital developmental and progressive types of disabilities;
  • Identify and analyze the effects of age-related changes, disabilities and visual impairments on driving
  • List alternative community mobility and transportation options
  • Recognize the driver assessment process and implications of disabilities and medical conditions for driver assessment, training and vehicle modification;
  • Identify adaptive driving equipment and/or interventions and vehicle modifications;
  • Identify and discuss solutions for appropriate driver licensing

Beth Anderson Gibson, OTR/L, CDRS

Beth has been an occupational therapist in the Atlanta area and has specialized in the field of driver rehabilitation for the last 25 years.  She received her BS in OT from the University of New Hampshire.  She is the director of driver services for Freedom & Mobility a private driver evaluation and training company proving services throughout the entire state of Georgia.   Freedom & Mobility serves clients from their teen years to their 90’s.  Evaluations and training are provided for older drivers and most physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities.  The company provides both low and high tech equipment evaluations.

Beth is the author of two textbook chapters on driver rehabilitation topics and has been a speaker at numerous local and national conferences including ADED, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association, and the Georgia State University OT program.  Beth is a long time member of the older driver safety task force sponsored by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.  She is active in ADED and has served as the Executive Board Secretary and was the ADED newsletter editor for six years.
