     ■ Case Study Roundtable
     ■ Sleep and the Impacts on Driving

Abstract:
Sleep deprivation, sleep apnea, and sleep disorders are contributing factors to motor vehicle crashes here in the United States. Clients in need of a driving evaluation are typically impacted further by comorbidities and sleep disorders placing them at higher risk for crashing due to cognitive, physical, and emotional fatigue. Understanding the effects of sleep deprivation on driving, how to assess for sleep deficits, educate clients, and teach strategies for fatigue management with driving are imperative for facilitating safety with return to driving, continuing independent driving, and knowing when to make the decision that driving is not safe due to level of drowsiness/fatigue.
Learning Objectives:

Identify the stages of sleep and Basic Principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia
Identify Concerns and Warnings of sleep behaviors that result in risky drivers
Determine which Sleep Surveys to administer during driving evaluation to assess driving risk
Understand sleep medication applications and implications on driving
Identify Strategies for increasing driving safety
