Medications, Marijuana and Driving

Presented by: Kathy Collins, PharmD, BCPS

Speaker Bio: Kathleen Collins is a clinical pharmacist at Craig Hospital. She is the Chair of the Medication Use and Safety Committee, and supervises and mentors pharmacy students at Craig Hospital. She also has been appointed as clinical instructor at Regis University School of Pharmacy and Colorado School of Pharmacy. She has presented numerous times on the effects of medications and marijuana in relation to those who have become injured and disabled.

Post trauma patients are more likely to have multiple medications to manage their symptoms.  These patients may also use marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes.  Understanding the clinical effects of marijuana and a patient’s prescription medications on motor and cognitive function is key to providing a safe therapeutic environment, as well as addressing safety concerns with relation to driving.

Describe how different types of marijuana products may impact a patient.

Summarize the available evidence using marijuana for therapeutic purposes.

List at least three specific safety concerns for the use of marijuana.

List at least two medications that may contribute to motor and cognitive impairment when combined with marijuana.
